Kate Wilcox is a visual artist with greatly varied interests. She started her journey with point and shoot type cameras but didn't really start focusing on her photography until she bought her first adjustable digital camera in 2003. After accumulating a collection of antique Nikon camera lenses, she purchased her first used Nikon dSLR camera body and began teaching herself manual photography so she could use her new tools productively.
Kate's photography experience broadened greatly when she began working at the University of New Hampshire and used her tuition benefit to take photography classes, learning SLR film photography including basic darkroom procedures, alternative photography techniques such as Salt Prints and Cyanotypes, and large format photography, purchasing her first 4x5 Busch Pressman camera, circa 1952. One of her next goals is to be able to develop the 4x5 sheet film at home.
Kate is dedicated to continuously honing her skills with her newer Nikon equipment, frequently engaging in Environmental Event photography. She enjoys capturing intricate details through macro insect photography with the Maine Entomological Society and participating in the Mount Washington Valley Butterfly Count. Her visual storytelling prowess is well-recognized, thanks to her keen eye for detail. She treasures her membership in the Greater Rochester Camera Club, where she collaborates with a curious and like-minded group of photography enthusiasts. In 2023, Kate's exceptional commitment was honored with a nomination for the Spirit of NH Award by the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests. This award, presented by Volunteer NH, celebrates individuals who go above and beyond to serve the Granite State.
